” Liberal Leader Dominique Anglade promised Thursday to abolish the welcome tax for first-time homebuyers to help them cope with the dramatic rise in house prices.

” The Liberal Party first presented the proposals on the welcome tax and Home Buyers’ Plan in April. The welcome tax — also known as land transfer duties — normally goes to municipalities where properties are purchased. The party proposes to compensate them for the loss of revenue.”

” When the proposal was announced in April, the Coalition Avenir Québec government said it would only serve to heat up an already overheated housing market and increase prices. Anglade discounted this Thursday, saying first-time homebuyers are not the ones responsible for driving up housing costs.”
